WEEK ONE, DAY THREE, COMMON ENGLISH BIBLE COMPANION
THEME: READ THE BIBLE
DAY THREE TITLE: FINDING YOUR WAY IN THE BIBLE
SCRIPTURE: JAMES 1:19-25
SCRIPTURE SNIPPET: …”welcome the word planted deep inside you — the very word that is able to save you. You must be doers of the word and not only hearers who mislead themselves.”
THOUGHTS: Key phrases listed in this scripture: quick to listen; slow to speak; slow to anger; produce God’s righteousness; in humility, set aside all evil; seek out what is deeply planted inside – God’s word that will save you; be doers of the word, not only hearers; study the perfect law of freedom and do it; they will be blessed. Some of these are action phrases and some of them are result phrases, but all are bullet points that keep us on track with our Earthly walk with our Father. All these phrases give direction as to how God’s word works in our lives. It enables our actions and reactions. It gives us more than what is going on in the immediate moment. God’s Word prepares us for every situation under heaven. Through God’s Word we understand righteousness – how it is God’s essence in our lives, not something that we can attain through a worksheet of do’s and don’ts. It teaches us humility that allows us to be true to ourselves and transparent with others and gives us the ability to discern, sort through what things in our life are good and what are evil. The Holy Spirit brings remembrance to us and interprets scripture to us so that we may apply it daily in our lives. Though we may never be able to sufficiently memorize every scripture – nor should we – its essences takes root in us and comes forth as we need it. God’s word saves us … from ourselves, from others, from every evil. We must feast regularly on every bit of God’s word. We must hear and process it and act on it. We must study God’s word and ask questions of ourselves about it and dissect out its truth for our living. As we make a steady diet of God’s word, it enbles us to act in strong and confident ways … it sets us free to be and to do good. The results will always be for good. God’s word purges us of evil so that all that is left is good, but we have to keep the feast going or those weeds of evil will keep thriving and reappearing in hindering ways. Our heart is like the garden of Eden – all good things were put there – everything we would ever need – and it was all good. But evil cannot and will not leave that alone, we have to be good gardeners, recognizing the weeds and submitting them over to God releasing them again and again – weeding that garden so that the good things originally put there can flourish. God’s word is the perfect gardner – let us release ourselves to God’s word in order to be righteous – one minute, each and every minute of every day. All to Jesus, I surrender. Amen.
