CHOOSE LIFE

WEEK ONE, DAY FIVE, COMMON ENGLISH BIBLE COMPANION

THEME: READ THE BIBLE

DAY FIVE TITLE: CHANGE COMES

SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 30:11-20

SCRIPTURE SNIPPET:   “I call heaven and earth as my witnesses against you right now:  I have set life and death, blessing and curse before you.  Now choose life — so that you and your descendants will live — by loving the Lord your God, by obeying his voice, and by clinging to him.  That’s how you will survive and live long on the fertile land the Lord swore to give to your ancestors: to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

THOUGHTS: The book of Deuteronomy is a very pertinent book to the salvation and continuance of the Hebrew people following their release from slavery and their indwelling of the Promised Land. Moses will not be going over the Jordan and into the Promised Land, but the Hebrew Nation will, and there are lots of reminders that need to be made to make sure they remember everything learned on the way to this point. They have been together a long time now – 40 years in the wilderness – journeying to the promised land. Along this journey from slavery to becoming their own nation, there have been many lessons! From the opening of the Red Sea to the creation of the golden calf idol to the manna from heaven to water in the wilderness to the encounter with the serpents …. there have been lots of ups and lots downs. I am sure that Moses is anxious to let this people free on their own – like a Father whose child is leaving home, but the time has come. So Moses literally preaches his heart out reminding this peculiar people to remember. Remember God!

Choose Life! Moses promised that this new life, just like the time in the wilderness, is still under the authorship and umbrella of God. His presence will remain with them all along the way, just as it has since the beginning of the journey – but these persons must continually make choices. Moses is very direct, “If you obey the Lord your God’s commandments that I’m commanding you right now by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments, his regulations, and his case laws, then you will live and thrive, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” Earlier Moses has stated that what is being asked of these people is not too hard for them. It is simply making a choice. There are two paths that can be taken now – one leads to life and the other to destruction. Moses’ begs of them all to CHOOSE LIFE!

The people have depended on Moses for a long time, but now it is their turn. Each must make their own relationship with their Father and make holy living a priority. Some of the behaviors of the past – the golden calf for example – are choices for death. Moses warns these people that if they choose to be mislead – turning their hearts away and refusing to listen, worshiping other gods and serving them – well, they will surely die. It almost echoes from the Garden of Eden…. “The Lord commanded the human, ‘Eat your fill from all of the garden’s trees; but don’t eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil because not he day you eat from it, you will die!'” (Genesis 2:16-18 CEB)

And those same words trickle on down to us today. How do we have life and life abundantly? Deuteronomy 30:16 – “If you obey the Lord your God’s commandments that I’m commanding you right now by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments, his regulations, and his case laws, then you will live and thrive, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” We don’t have Moses to remind us how to live – We have more – we have God’s word – written to equip us for the living of our days – come what may. We have it all recorded and available to launch into so that we know God’s ways and we understand God’s amazing and unlimited love for each of us, and we know the power of the Holy Spirit to help us keep on keeping on in the midst of every trial. The Bible displays the life of Jesus who taught us through example how to hold on and keep on holding on. God’s ways lead to life. They always have and they always will. Help us Lord. to keep making the right choices, to CHOOSE LIFE!
